Halloween in Jacó Beach, Costa Rica
Do something different this year for Halloween; head for Jaco, Costa Rica
Halloween in Jacó, Costa Rica is an extravaganza; every bit as colorful and lively as Carnival in Rio. And, depending on which day of the week the 31st falls on, Halloween in Jacó can be a multi-day event.
Jacó, like other tourism-oriented towns in Costa Rica, doesn’t miss a chance to bring out the crowds on Halloween. Local bar staff, as well as many of the casino staff, pull out all the stops for their costumes, including make-up and body paint. The ex-pats and the customers enthusiastically join the festivities. Here’s what to expect.
For adults, Halloween is party time and Halloween costumes are the name of the game in Jacó. Locals and tourists usually start the party at the Backyard Bar, just down the beach from Croc’s Resort. You’re likely to see some of the most elaborate (and skimpy) costumes here. The competition is stiff because everyone wants to win bragging rights for best costume, never mind the prizes that the Backyard puts up every year.
Definitely plan to bar hop because live music, dancing, and dedicated celebrations are a feature of Jacó’s nightclubs. And never more so than on Halloween, when every local business advertises their Halloween party as the biggest and best in Jacó. Expect nearly all of them to have Halloween parties and costume-themed events. The party continues into the wee hours or until you drop.
Costa Ricans also celebrate the date as Masquerade Day. Throughout the country, people gather for parades and wear large traditional masks. The masks are gigantic and use a frame to rest on your shoulders. While some are scary, they’re nothing out of a horror movie. Made of clay, fiberglass, or resin and paper, they’re painted or dyed with different media for a whimsical effect that gives each one its unique personality.
Trick or treating is not as widespread as in the U.S., but there are likely to be children’s events and even some places hosting safe trick-or-treat for the younger crowd. The team at Croc’s can help you find the right activities for you and your kids, and probably even have some of their own events planned.
Many families in the area like to rent golf carts and dress them up, as well, for the evening. With a few bags of fake spider’s web and a little imagination, you can create a ride that is as well-costumed as you and the kids are.
For a sure- thing regarding plenty of Halloween candy, head over to Los Sueños Resort and hit up each of the guard’s gates. You won’t be allowed in the communities to go door to door, but trust me- the gate attendants will have you covered. Next, wrap up the day’s trick or treating at the Marina Village, where shops and restaurants will have many treats to impart, followed by an entry into the costume contest at The Hook Up.
Croc’s Resort and Casino makes a perfect base camp for the celebrations. Halloween may not be a traditional holiday in Costa Rica, but Jacó has embraced it as its own. Contact us for more information about our resort and what’s on tap this year for Halloween.
